The Book of Romans was dictated by Paul to his scribe Tertius, while Paul was in Corinth on his third missionary journey. Although Paul was a self-admitted free-born Roman citizen, he was born in Tarsus of Cilicia and had never been to Rome.
God had called him to be a pioneer evangelist, preaching of Christ to the Gentiles, in places that had not yet heard about Christ. He says himself in Romans 15:20, he chose to avoid places that already heard about the gospel so he would not build on anyone else’s foundation.
In addition to informing them of his proposed visit, Paul writes to his brothers and sisters in Rome a lengthy dissertation on the righteousness of God. This letter is his masterwork and addresses the foundational truths of Christianity while directly confronting false doctrines of his day and ours. Paul argues persuasively:
- All are guilty before God (Jews and Gentiles alike)
- All need a Savior
- Christ died for all
- We all, through faith, are one body in Christ
